The haenyeo, often referred to as real-life mermaids, are renowned for their extraordinary diving skills and their ability to sustain their communities through their unique way of life. As the majority of haenyeo are now in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, their traditional practices and lifestyle face considerable jeopardy. “The Last of the Sea Women” captures their spirited battle against these modern challenges, showcasing their determination to preserve their heritage.
Directed and produced by Sue Kim, the documentary offers a poignant look into the lives of both veteran and novice haenyeo.
