Apple TV+ is set to premiere a captivating new documentary titled “The Last of the Sea Women” on October 11, 2024. This highly anticipated film delves into the lives of the haenyeo divers from South Korea’s Jeju Island, a group of resilient women who have been diving into the ocean depths for centuries to harvest seafood without the aid of oxygen tanks.

The haenyeo, often referred to as real-life mermaids, are renowned for their extraordinary diving skills and their ability to sustain their communities through their unique way of life. As the majority of haenyeo are now in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, their traditional practices and lifestyle face considerable jeopardy. “The Last of the Sea Women” captures their spirited battle against these modern challenges, showcasing their determination to preserve their heritage.

Directed and produced by Sue Kim, the documentary offers a poignant look into the lives of both veteran and novice haenyeo. It explores their tight-knit friendships, fierce independence, and the empowering spirit that drives them. The film paints an inspiring picture of these women standing up to global forces to protect their cherished ocean, while also sparking a renewed interest in their tradition among younger generations.

The film is produced by Malala Yousafzai through her production company, Extracurricular, in collaboration with Erika Kennair. Executive producers include Nicole Stott, Emily Osborne, Harry Go, and Marissa Torres Ericson from A24. “The Last of the Sea Women” will debut as an official selection of the TIFF Docs Program before its release on Apple TV+.
